General introduction
Today's modern and efficient companies have been required to develop top level maintenance strategies to match their investment particularly in the advanced manufacturing technologies. This has resulted in a considerable gap between the required skills and expertise which are essential to maximise the potential benefits from these technologies and the skill set which currently exists within the maintenance sections of industry.
Programme details
The Programme consists of two parts, the Postgraduate Diploma ( PgD ) and the Master of Science Degree ( MSc ). The Postgraduate Diploma ( PgD ) consists of eight taught modules which in the full time mode are completed over a six month period starting in September each year. Each module is taught over a three week period. The first week consists of formal lectures followed by two weeks for consolidation, course work and private study. On satisfactory completion of the PgD students will proceed to the MSc. For the MSc students will be required to carry out a major project (normally in an industrial environment) and submit a final report for examination. This will be completed over a four month period following the PgD. Thus, in the full time mode, the MSc can be completed in one year. The programme is designed to be attractive to industrial organisations with staff involved in asset management and maintenance activities. In this case the students can attend in the part time mode and complete the programme over a two year period. The students will complete four PgD modules during the six month period in the first year, followed by the remaining four PgD modules during the six month period in the second year and finally completing the MSc project also in the second year. The structure is flexible and part time students can choose to complete any number of modules depending upon their circumstances. The attraction of this scheme is that the part time students will only be expected to attend the University for the first week of each taught module when formal lectures take place. The following two weeks for consolidation, course work and private study can be undertaken at the student's workplace with telephone and e-mail support from the University. Thus for the two year part time scheme described above, students will only be expected to attend the University for four weeks each year. The MSc project will may be carried at out the student's workplace.
